The Damnation Creek Trail in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park in Northern California is my favorite trail I hiked while working in California for a year. It is an 1.4 mile (one way) out and back trail consisting of a 1,000 feet elevation drop through the redwoods out to the coast. The 2.8 mile distance may not seem like much except for the elevation drop and climb back to the trail head. The landscape looks like it’s from the Jurassic period with large ferns and coastal redwoods.
The dramatic topography, dense foliage, and view opening out to the ocean cannot be replicated.
I would definitely recommend this hike if you are in the area. During the summer of 2017 the footbridge was damaged, but it was still passable.
